Spencerport, NY

Hello

We spent the day here in a wonderful small town, Spencerport,NY. It is about an hour plus on the Canal from Brockport and about 4 hours from Fairport where we are meeting Nick and Sue on Tuesday.

So we had a lot of time this afternoon to talk to the local people about our trip. Many if not most of them can not get their hands or heads around the idea of living on a boat for a year and going south.
Some are jealous, some think of all the practical problems one has to figure out. How do you get your mail seems to be #1. But everybody seems to wish us well in our journey and wished that they could go with us. I try to tell them that we had a unique set of circumstances that just worked out for us and decided to go for it rather than just continue to do what we would do if we stayed in New London all the time.

Today we went on a 7 miles bike ride and visited a Bed and Breakfast that was founded in 1828 as a Canal Tavern. It is right on the Canal at Adam's Basin. Back in the old days, about 182 years ago, there were separate doors for the women and men to enter the Inn. Seems the ladies were not allowed in the Tavern part of the Inn, so they had to enter through a separate front door and go around the Tavern Room. The Inn was vacant from 1922 to 1972 and almost falling down, but a gentleman in the area bought it and restored it back to life. It is on the web but I do not know the address, but it should not be too hard to find.

Several river/canal rental boats drove by today. They are week to week rentals out of Rochester. I have included a picture of one of them passing under the lift bridge here at Spencerport. They are long and fairly wide.

Tonight at dinner time we had a live band at the gazebo right next to where we parked our boat. Plus a local restauranteur pulled up with his catering cart, and we had instant dinner along with the corn on the cob we bought at today's Farmers Market in Brockport. Life is good with fresh Italian sausage and sweet summer corn.

Tomorrow it is off to Fairport, considered the best town on the Canal. We shall see.

Joe
